According to a group of individuals who conducted a study encompassing 25 years worth of avalanches, several conclusions can be made concerning the incidence of avalanches in the French Alps. These individuals have affiliations to several facilities including the University of Paris, the University of Laval in Quebec, and the CNRS Laboratory of Physical Geography. According to these individuals, their study showed that the amount of precipitation for three successive days along with a change in air temperature correlates to the occurrence of an avalanche in the high-frequency tracks of the French Alps. For the low-frequency tracks, the occurrence of an avalanche seems to be related to the amount of precipitation for three successive days only. Heavy snows in particular can be damaging. As waves of snow come crashing down, skiers and snowboarders are at risk of injury and even death. Since the national weather service for France tracks the likelihood of an avalanche in specific parts of the French Alps, skiers receive warning that certain days are going to have high-risk probability for the occurrence of an avalanche. This rating system covers five levels with a five being the highest or severest risk of an avalanche occurring in a given location. Even a level of four places the area at risk of an impending avalanche. For their own protection, skiers in the French Alps should pay attention to France's national weather service and their predictions for an avalanche to occur. Obtaining travel or holiday insurance could provide skiers with some compensation should they need to put off enjoying the pristine white slopes of the French Alps whilst on holiday. Insurance cover designed for a skiing holiday would protect the individual against postponing his holiday or provide assistance with any injuries occurring whilst skiing. Both single trip and annual cover are available.
