Fuengirola Tourist Guide

By: Caron Kristan

Fuengirola is a town in the Andalucia region of Spain on the Costa del Sol. In the 1960s, this town saw a transformation from a small fishing village into a modern high rise holiday resort that is popular with local and foreign tourists alike.

As well as having over five miles of beautiful sandy beaches, Fuengirola can also boast several bars, restaurants, shops, supermarkets, entertainment venues, self catering apartments, and plush high rise hotels.

Fuengirola is just twenty minutes away from Malaga International Airport by road, and local bus and train services allow easy access to other resorts in the Costa del Sol, such as Torremolinos and Benalmadena.

The Fuengirola beachfront has one of the longest promenades in the Costa del Sol area, and this was recently widened and landscaped to improve it further. The nightlife in Fuengirola is positively buzzing, with live entertainment, late bars, and discotheques galore.

For those who hanker after a more traditional Spanish experience, the Los Boliches area, just next to the main resort, has all the winding narrow streets and whitewashed houses that you would expect of a traditional Spanish village. The locals of this area organise a big fiesta every year, where they send an effigy of the Virgin out to sea with a number of boats trailing in her wake.

Unsurprisingly for a coastal area with strong links to the fishing industry, the local specialty in Fuengirola is seafood. There are plenty of restaurants serving superb fresh seafood dishes such as seabass baked in salt, shellfish with rice, and sardine kebabs.

As you might expect, there are plenty of traditional Spanish tapas places in Fuengirola, where you can sample lots of local specialities such as prawns in garlic and Spanish chorizo sausage. Also, you can get pizza, fish and chips, kebabs, and burgers at a number of local fast food joints.

If you fancy a day out, you might want to head to Fuengirola Zoo, which is the only zoo in the area, the Tivoli amusement park at Arroyo de la Miel, or the or the water park on the Fuengirola bypass. There are also plenty of sea and beach activities on offer, such as scuba diving, windsurfing, and sailing.
