Galway is a coastal city of the west coast of Ireland. A truly picturesque town with much to explore, it is bursting with the literary, music and arts cultures that Ireland is famous for. Well worth a trip on your arrival is a visit to the local tourist information centre, where you can find details of the latest of the regular arts events and festivals that tale place in the city each year. A truly unique experience awaits you just two miles from Rossaveal Harbour at the heart of Connemara. The Seawinds Nursery and Tropical Butterfly Centre allows you to walk amongst some of the rarest butterfly species in the world, as well as a collection of some of the rarest exotic plants in a series of tropical garden enclosures. Galway, being a coastal city, is famed for its seafood. Every year in late September the city celebrates with its Galway Oyster Festival. Opening the Festival each year is the Oyster Opening Championship, with competitors from all over the world, and all week long you can sample the finest oysters in the world. Eyre Square in Galway City itself, now known as John F. Kennedy Park, is a beautiful spot to relax from the hustle and bustle of the city and watch the world go by. It is a popular spot, especially with summer picnic makers and features a statue of the much-loved local writer Paraic O Connaire. Get some great views over Galway, and especially the beautiful Galway Bay by taking a drive west along the coast to Spiddal. If you want to see more of the lovely Irish countryside around Galway, then continue heading west along this road and you will reach the Twelve Pins of Connemara mountain range. A must see for any fans of that great writer W. B. Yeats is his former holiday home at Gort. Yeats bought Thoor Ballylee in 1916 and the property was once a Norman tower house. It is now open to for the public to explore, with audio tours provided too. The medieval town of Athenry is well worth a visit. Buses and organised outings will take you there for day trips, or you can make the 23km drive yourself. It is the only remaining walled town in the country and its architecture, dating back to the 13th century makes for a fascinating day out. Literary buffs can take a short trip out of Galway to Coole Park in Gort. This was once the residence of Lady Gregory, a friend of Yeats and founding member of the Abbey Theatre. Each summer Irish writers would holiday at her home, and their names can still be seen engraved on one of the yew trees in the garden.
