Fun festival days out in Menorca

By: Jarrett Altrogge

The Menorcans love to party and with festivals and fiestas taking place in every month of the year thy have plenty of reasons to celebrate. Festivals range from traditional religious festivals and saints days through to more modern festivities that celebrate local music and the arts. All festivals are suitable for all the family.

Wherever celebrations are taking place you are sure to see the Menorcan horse. The horse is a particularly important emblem of Menorca, with the special Menorcan breed having been carefully bred to create an elegant shape and distinct black colouring.

At all of the festivals on the island you will find fruit punches, traditional foods and the traditional drink of Pomeda. This delicious and refreshing cocktail is made from locally produced gin mixed with lemon juice or fizzy lemonade.

By far the most important festival in the Menorcan calendar is the festival of Sant Joan in Ciutadella. You will see the Menorcan black horse opening up the festivities, parading through the streets and doing tricks. The festival takes place on 23rd and 24th June each year.

To brighten up the colder months of the year, the Menorcans host carnival parades each February all over the island. Palma hosts the biggest and most spectacular displays, but you will find colourful celebrations, fancy dress balls and fantastic food and music in almost every town.

One of the biggest and brightest celebrations in all of the Balearic Islands is the Menorcan spring flower festival. The Festa de Maig can be found in Santa Eulalia and takes place on the first Sunday of each May.

If you are lucky enough to be in Menorca for the new year celebrations then the feasting that takes place during the Festa del Estandard festival is a must. This magnificent day, and night, of feasting will allow you to taste all of the finest local speciality dishes and sweets.

Harvest time, local produce and all things culinary are celebrated each November at the Dilous Bo festival. Food is important to Menorcan families and you will find a fine selection of dishes, handmade cakes and sweet treats available that you will never find anywhere else!
