Here are a few of the country's natural attractions that tourists should look out for. The Giant Panda: One of the rarest animals in the world, the Giant Panda is indigenous only to China. Only a few of the pandas still exist in the wild, but you can see the beast in all its glory in China's zoos. If you're lucky, you might even spot one chewing bamboo in a remote thicket. The white-flag dolphin: Although named a 'dolphin', this attractive mammal is actually one of only two species of freshwater whale in the world. It can be found in the Yangtze River, and is one of the Holy Grails of Chinese wildlife watchers. The Takin: If you bump into a takin unexpectedly then you might be forgiven for thinking you had discovered the elusive Yeti. The animal looks like a cross between a moose and a bear, with thick bodies, piggy eyes and long hair. Find them lurking in rhododendron and bamboo thickets in remote areas. The Tufted Deer: Tiny and incredibly cute, these little deer are only around 25 inches in height. They live in high valleys and mountain forests, and males can be distinguished by their long, sharp canines and the small antlers hidden under the cluster of hair on their foreheads. The Serow: One of China's more common species, the Serow is a small creature with short, solid hooves. It prefers mountain terrain, but will venture to the lowlands to look for food. Other distinctive features include long, tasselled ears and short, sharp horns.
