Getting the Fundamentals

By: Cierra Olshefski

If you''re considering taking up spread betting or CFD trading the first thing that you should do is try to work out what type of investor you want to be. Are you looking for quick gains or happy to go for steadier, longer term investments? Are you looking to spread bet or CFD trade? Do you know which market you would like to trade in?

The answer to these questions will have a serious impact on the kind of skills you will need to learn, particularly the decision as to whether you''re looking for short or long term returns.

As recent events have proven, trading on stock markets is extremely challenging and the successful trader will use a broad range of tools to inform his or her decisions. These tools almost all fall into two categories: fundamental analysis and technical analysis.

Fundamental analysis is, in brief, all the fundamentals details of a company. Consideration of things like balance sheets, outstanding debts, the strength of competitors and even the skill of the directors can be involved in fundamental analysis.

Fundamental analysis is then used to balance these factors against each other and determine whether the current asking price is too high or too low, the trader then bets in the other direction. Fundamental analysis is generally for the long term investor, as the price can move temporarily despite the business fundamentals.

Technical analysis uses historical variations in price to try and ascertain what the price will do next. Technical analysts use a wide range of tools such as simple averages, exponential averages, lines of support and resistance as well as learning to spot various patterns in the market from which they can predict what will happen next.

Technical analysis is often used by day traders and people looking to make a shorter term profit. This is because using technical analysis it can be difficult to determine longer-term trends, so medium term investors tend to use a combination of fundamental and technical analysis to inform their trades.

CFD trading companies often offer a wide range of resources to new traders to help them get some skills under their belt. Make sure you take advantage of these, there are thousands of ways of trying to predict the market and it is vital that you at least understand the basics before you begin.
