Dating has come a long way since the days of your parents. They probably met at work or through a mutual friend, probably not through a dating agency. People didn't 'need' an outside party to act as match-maker. However, the match-making concept isn't new. The most common way for people to meet a partner is through a mutual friend, either by being set up on a date or at a party. The internet has now replaced the role of the mutual friend and can give you access to more potential partners than all your friends' friends could muster all at the click of a button from the office or the comfort of your home. Until quite recently, dating agencies have been viewed with scorn or sarcasm. Most people were too embarrassed to admit their membership or too stubborn to join, but this has all changed. But now almost five million people use dating sites every day and around 20 million newlyweds met on internet dating sites. Why? Time is a big factor but also people's perceptions have changed. Dating websites are now full of fun, flirty and very charismatic individuals. We do pretty much everything online these days, from banking to shopping so why not dating? In large cities it has never been easy to find Mr or Mrs Right, but seeing as we spend increasing hours at work or commuting we have less time for meeting potential partners. Glasgow is the largest city in Scotland and the third largest in the UK with a population of over 600,000 just in its city limits rising to over a million if the suburbs and surrounding areas are taken into account. You would think that this large population would make it easier to find a date, but in fact it seems to have the opposite effect. Maybe there are too many fish in the sea. But online dating means you can find other Glaswegian individuals who have the same interests, likes and dislikes as you. This not only makes first dates a lot easier as there is less risk of awkward silence, but it also makes the chance of Cupids arrow striking love even more likely.
