Give Portugal Alvor chance

By: Caron Kristan

In the past decade, Portugal has slowly been making an attempt to topple Spain''s dominance of tourism in the Iberian Peninsula. Although not quite matching the Spanish giant, it is getting close. However, this more relaxed, and less obvious take on tourism makes it all the more appealing.

Resorts are smaller and whole coastlines aren''t dominated by seemingly endless beach hotels, bars and restaurants serving fish and chips. Just a short walk or drive away from even the larger towns and cities in the Algarve and you can breathe a breath of tourist free air, and see the real Portugal.

Much of Portugal still has some old school charm, with medieval castles, remote rarely updated villages and rugged coastlines. The interior is dry and hot in the south and the north is lush and green.

The coast is what attracts most tourists however. Cliffs are dramatic, coves are crescent shaped and filled with white sand, dunes are enriched with wildflowers and the ocean itself is wild and powerful as popular with whales as it is with surfers.

Southern Portugal fronted by low-lying hills and the wide beaches of the Algarve is the main tourist region. Pristine sand stretching for over 100 miles, from the Spanish border to Cape St. Vincent, define this region. Once upon a time, towns here were sleepy fishing villages and remnants of this history remain, scattered throughout the maze-like streets, whitewashed town houses and still bustling ports.

The pretty resort of Alvor is one of the best examples of this. Catering to the needs of first-class seafood restaurants, Alvor''s port is still thriving. This town is relaxed and typically Portuguese and really does have a little bit for everyone.

Praia do Alvor is the town''s main beach, and remarkably even during peak season, you''ll find plenty of elbowroom along its sandy expanse. However Praia dos Tres Iramos a few miles away is even more perfect than you thought possible of a European beach.

If you are looking for more thrills check out the giant water park at Alcantarilha. The Kamikaze and the Banzai Boggan will test your nerves but if these get the better of you just outside the town you can go horse riding, play golf or team up for a paintballing war. Getting bored is impossible.
