Now everybody knows it is not the easiest time in the world for graduates at the moment. While it may not be quite as bad as it was this time last year, prospects aren''t exactly in abundance for the graduating class of 2010. Things are looking up (slightly) for a couple of reasons. The UK has finally come out of the recession, albeit only by 0.1%, which means that there is less financial uncertainty and prospective employers are at least willing to start taking on new people. The second reason is much more banal. Basically, we''ve gotten used to it. Remember the melodramatic BBC announcements of the impending doom and recession misery that came out just as the credit crunch happened? Well, we''ve become immune to such sensationalism. There have simply been so many reports, so many news bulletins, and so much time devoted to going on and on and on about the recession that we have begun to lose interest. We don''t care anymore. We know its pretty bad, but we are just going to get our heads down and get on with it. This attitude isn''t just one resigned to the general public either. Employers are beginning to think in the same terms and start eyeing their profit margin not in terms of ''oh god, stop hiring people, we''re losing money'' to ''oh god, we''re losing money, hire new people!'' This is the best possible news for graduates. That said, don''t get ahead of yourselves. Employers aren''t going to magic themselves back to pre recession times and start hiring left right and centre, they are playing it safe and slow. Still, at least now there is hope. CV''s at the ready. Basically, what you need to figure out is what you are going to do with yourself in the meantime. Well, the best place to start looking is the Guardian, who as ever, are right on the ball when it comes to graduate jobs. Keep scouring the internet too. You just need to keep both eyes open. At the end of the day, what it boils down to is that things aren''t as bad as they could be. Sure, they''re not great, but at least there''s hope. If you really want something, then there are opportunities out there. You just need to keep at it.
