Hanoi is situated around Hoan Kiem Lake, separating the Old Quarter in the north, the formerly French Quarter in the south. To the west lies the former Imperial City where many of the most striking monuments are to be found. All around the city evidence of the Vietnam War can be found. In the Old Quarter, for example, is the Long Bien Bridge, the first - and for a long time the only ? bridge across the Red River, which was one of the most heavily defended areas during the conflict. A little further to the south is 48 Hang Ngang, another historical turning point for the Vietnamese - the address at which Ho Chi Minh drafted Vietnam's declaration of independence, 1945. The French Quarter tends to be the centre for culture, containing the Opera House, Hanoi's History Museum, the Museum of Vietnamese Revolution and the Museum of Vietnamese Women, all of which help to gain a little understanding of the diversity and development of Hanoi's place in Vietnam. For a detailed look at the affectionately known 'Uncle Ho', head to the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum where his embalmed body can still be seen in a darkened room. You can also visit his old residence at 3 Ngoc Ha. To see a little more of Vietnam from your base in Hanoi you might want to head south to the Perfume Pagoda ? north Vietnam's best known pilgrimage site. The pagoda is certainly worth seeing if your spending your visit solely in Hanoi, however if you're travelling further and seeing other temples the hordes of tourists at this one could deter you. Despite there being no compulsory vaccinations for entry into Vietnam, there are several recommended which you should consult your doctor about. With different climates, foods and common infections, travellers are at a higher risk of falling ill, so always prepare with full travel insurance before you leave.
