Although most jobs in American companies are filled by Americans, a small yet crucial percentage of jobs go unfilled by the local workforce each season. Local businesses have two alternatives for recruiting the international labor force they demand: filing for H-2B visas or hiring J-1 student visa workers. Both types of visas help to fill an employer's temporary need for unskilled entry-level workers. Each season a total of 33, 000 H-2B visa workers are allowed to enter the USA. H-2B visa holders arrive the USA twice a year: from October 1 to March 31 (winter season) and from April 1 to September 30 (summer season). With two seasons allowing 33, 000 employees each, a total limit of 66, 000 H-2B visas is issued nationwide annually. Due to the complicated H-2B visa application procedure and the current cap on its usage, some businesses are searching for J-1 student employees instead. There is no limitation the number of J-1 visa workers entering the States. The law permits J-1 student employees to have a few jobs simultaneously. The student fills in all visa applications in their fatherland and is either approved or denied there. J-1 student workers have proved to be a perfect solution to the shortage of labour. J-1 student employees are a viable alternative for many businesses. Nevertheless, J-1 visas have the downside. J-1 student visa workers are only eligible to work four months a year - the period that corresponds to their summer vacation time. J-1 student visa holders work for about 90 days, starting from June/May, and then discover the United States for 30 days - the so-called grace period - before leaving for their home counties. It means that J-1 student employees can legally stay in the USA for about four months.
