Cala D Or is a well established resort town on the eastern coast of Mallorca, or Majorca to use the local spelling. Mallorca is the largest Spanish island, and is part of the Balearic archipelago. Mallorca is popular with European tourists, particularly from Germany and Britain. Cala D Or is about 40 miles east of the main airport on Mallorca, the Son Sant Joan International airport, which is just outside the capital of the island, Palma de Mallorca. The roads from the airport to the east coast are in general fairly basic, so the relatively short transfer can take up to two hours by coach. Cala D Or has been well developed in the conservation sense, avoiding some of the overdevelopment seen on the south coast of mainland Spain. The original small fishing village at the centre of the modern resort town is quite small, and home to some of the best bars and cafes in Cala D Or. As is the case in much of the island, it is possible to take a day trip out on a glass bottomed boat for a spot of aquatic sight seeing. In fact, the marina at Cala D Or is one of the most prominent features of the town, and has moorings for some 565 boats. If you visit Cala D Or during the middle of August the annual Fiesta of la Mare de Deu del Mar is an extra bonus and features a large procession through the harbour, and some sporting events. In rough translation, the festival is called ''Our Lady of the Sea''. Much of the east coast of Mallorca provides great opportunities for some gentle cycling. Bike rental and guided bike tours can be booked in Cala D Or, and take you on a pleasant trip through more gentle landscape than you''ll find in the mountainous area to the west of Mallorca. There are several good beaches in and around Cala D Or. Cala Gran is the beach nearest the centre of town, while to the north is the smaller beach of Cala Esmeralda. Further north still is another golden sand beach called Cala Ferrara, next to some picturesque rock formations and nice bars. If you take a short drive south, your efforts will be well rewarded with a visit to Mondrago national park. The Cala Mondrago is the secluded beach there, and is probably worth the drive in itself. The surrounding park area provides an idyllic sanctuary from the bustle of town life.
