Hotels in Cala Millor: How to get there and what to do

By: Caron Kristan

Cala Millor is largest holiday resort on the east coast of the Balearic island of Mallorca. Cala Millor translates into English as ''the better bay'', in contrast to the neighbouring Cala Bona ''the good bay''. Here is an introduction to this bustling and lively resort.

Cala Millor is about 40 miles away from the nearest airport, Son Sant Joan International airport near the capital of Mallorca, Palma. Transfers by coach from the airport to Cala Millor generally take around two hours. Those renting a car may be able shave some time off of this journey.

Those thinking of using taxis to transfer from the airport should be aware that most taxis do not have child car seats, and so children will have to sit on the laps of adults. Fixed price fares should apply to the transfer from Son Sant Joan International airport, although it is a good idea to confirm just what this price will be before departing in a cab.

The beach at Cala Millor is a main attraction of this resort. A mile long golden sand beach affords plenty of access to the calm waters of the bay, which are protected by rocky headlands on both sides of the beach, perhaps the reason that Cala Millor has the moniker ''better bay''.

In contrast, the coastline on most of the rest of the east coast of Mallorca is rocky and full of inlets and coves, with an exploration of this coastline an attraction in itself. This diversion from time at the beach is made all the easier of you rent a car.

Those that do rent a car have the option of visiting the Auto Safari Zoo on the outskirts of nearby Sa Coma. A 4km tour of the park can be taken in your car, but this runs the risk of monkey damage! Those that don''t fancy the risk of insurance excess payouts can take the mini train to tour the park.

Horse riding and pony trekking is provided at nearby Cala Bona at Rancho Willy. The shortest trek is about an hour and a half long, and this length of trek is what is generally on offer at the height of the summer season. Past peak season, longer two and three day excursions with overnight stays are available for the more adventurous.

Those who prefer the petrol form of horse power can take to the track at Avda karting track in Cala Millor. For a more relaxed form of travel, glass bottomed boats take regular cruises along past Cala Millor, another excellent way to explore the dramatic rocky coastline of the east coast of Mallorca.
