Hotels in Madeira: what to see and do

By: Caron Kristan

Madeira is the name of both an archipelago and the principal island in this Atlantic cluster. This Portuguese territory is located well into the Atlantic Ocean, making it the furthest flung portion of the European Union. Famous for the eponymous wine, Madeira is a popular tourist destination that offers plenty to see and do.

Also known as "Ilha Jardim" (Garden Island), Madeira enjoys mild temperatures all year round thanks to a sub tropical climate. Madeira is 620 miles from the coast of Europe, and 310 miles from the coast of Africa. Funchal is the capital of Madeira.

Funchal was built in a bay that is perhaps best described as a natural amphitheatre, surrounded by a dramatic backdrop of mountains, and is the birthplace of the famous Portuguese footballer Christiano Ronaldo. Funchal is a popular cruise ship destination, thanks in no small part to the view afforded to those approaching Funchal by ship, a view often described as one of the most striking in the world.

Elsewhere on the island, those dramatic mountains offer ample opportunity for hiking. There are several different operators offering eco tourism style walks and tours of the island, and this is one of the most popular tourist activities on Madeira.

Of particular note for keen walkers is the Ponta de Sao Lourenco nature reserve on the east of the island. Hiking through this reserve affords the opportunity to view dramatic volcanic rock formations and panoramic views of the Atlantic coast, as well as the native flora and fauna.

Sport is an important part of life on Madeira. Golf is a popular sport of the island, and the some of the courses are rated as world class. For those that like the action a little more pacy, there is also the opportunity to take to the track for a spot of Karting.

Thanks to the ample waves provided by the Atlantic, surfing is also popular on Madeira, at locations such as Paul do Mar, Jardim do Mar, and Ponta Pequena. A good gauge of the quality of the wavers is the fact that the World Surfing Championships were held on Madeira in 2001.

Madeira also offers some excellent sea fishing, thanks to being located in the middle of the Atlantic. Those that prefer to enjoy sea life without catching and eating it can take day out onto the water to enjoy the popular pastime of dolphin and whale spotting.
