By: Aeronx Mc Mall

Melbourne shuffle is a style of dance, that developed in the late 1980s in the Melbourne underground scene. The core movements in the dance are a quick heel-and-toe movements with a style suitable for various genres of electronic music. Some different incorporate arm movements.

The name "Melbourne shuffle" has been drawn from overseas DJs, party goers, visitors and the media attempting to show this phenomenon. The Age referred to as looking like "a cross between the chicken dance and a foot stomping robot" to the untrained eye, but locals have simply called it the "shuffle" since 1992.

Two main elements of the modern Melbourne shuffle that remain largely consistent are the component moves "Running man" and "Shuffle", which involves moves like the "T-step". The "Running man" involves a stomp forward followed by two hop backwards with the same foot, the other foot repeats the action leading to a running-on-the-spot motion. The "Shuffle" is a quick sideways heel-toe motion on one foot twisting at the ankle. The dance is embellished by spins, arm pumps, and kicks.

One popular modern style is called Hardstyle. Which is accompanied by music that features a quick 4/4 beat (also known as a 'four-on-the-floor beat), and is normally accompanied by a heavy, booming bass.
