How mobile phones can help you access the internet

By: Porter Ivrin

Advances in communication technology now means that we can do far more than just make calls from our mobile phones. Internet connectivity now comes as standard on almost all new mobile phones, although the level of quality that you experience when online using your phone can be variable depending on several factors.

Most new mobiles now have some kind of mobile internet connection, and there are several methods to choose from. GPRS, that is General Packet Radio Service, can reach a top speed of 128 kilobytes per second, making it the least speedy connection on the market at the moment.

Some mobile phones connect to the internet using Enhanced Data rates for Global Evolution, also known as EDGE, which gives you a top internet connection speed of around 236 kilobytes per second, allowing you to download a 3 megabyte size file in just less than two minutes.

You will most likely have heard of Third Generation mobile internet connections, more commonly known as 3G. These are reasonably fast connections at around a maximum data transfer rate of 384 kilobytes per second.

Some high end mobile phones are capable of an even faster form of 3G connection, known as HDSPA, which stands for High-Speed Downlink Packet Access. In theory, these connections are capable of speeds of up to 14.4 megabits per second, which is on a par with fast home broadband connections.

By far the fastest and cheapest way to connect your mobile phone to the internet is through a Wi Fi connection. More and more phones, particularly the more expensive ones, now offer this function, although you need to be within range of a Wi Fi transmitter in order to take advantage of it.

Some websites do not display accurately on some mobile phones, particularly those with smaller display screens. Thankfully there are a range of apps that help to make your mobile phone display social networking sites like MySpace and Facebook better.

The best phones for surfing the web have large, high resolution screens and web friendly control devices such as touch screen interfaces, QWERTY keyboards, trackballs and joysticks. There are now several phones with some of these features on the market, such as the Nokia N97, the iPhone, and the BlackBerry Storm.
