I love San Fran

By: Caron Kristan

San Francisco is one of the most populous cities in California. The city''s name probably conjures up images of brightly coloured houses, the Golden Gate Bridge, the summer of love, rolling hills ? these are only a few of its delights though. Here is a quick guide to a few of this city''s best attractions.

When it comes to getting to and from San Francisco there are a couple of available options. The most obvious is flight: San Francisco International Airport lies just outside the city limits, and there are regular bus services running between it and the city itself.

Because of its hilly geography the transportation within the city itself is worth planning in advance ? if you want a relaxing holiday, you don''t want to take the popular option of cycling for getting around! Taxis, buses and trams all offer less strenuous alternatives.

Hotels in San Francisco are what you''d expect from so popular a holiday destination: extremely varied in terms of cost and taste. For those who are looking to save funds then your best bet is probably something like a hostel ? a particularly friendly one is the Pacific Tradewinds Hostel. Luxury hotels are also pretty numerous ? the Hyatt Regency, The Westin San Francisco Market Street or the Intercontinental San Francisco will all suit even the most discerning traveller.

If a good nightlife is vitally important to your choice of holiday destination then San Francisco won''t disappoint. For an amazing night in a venue which mixes early 1900s decor with the latest in sound and entertainment technology then try a visit to The Parlour. If you want some live DJ sets then the centrally located Ruby Skye is worth checking out ? you might even spot a celebrity amongst your fellow clubbers.

Some of San Francisco''s parks and most of its beaches lie within the national park known as the Golden Gate National Recreation Area. This means that you can guarantee they''ll be well maintained, clean and safe. If you want to relax in the sun there is no better place than one of the beaches; they are also popular for water-sports like surfing.

The only problem you might have when choosing how to fill your days in San Francisco is fitting everything in. Each of the city''s neighbourhoods has its own particular atmosphere and delights ? there is a fantastic view of the city from Nob Hill, Haight-Ashbury was where the hippie movement truly began and people watching in North Beach is a great way to spend a day.

There are lots of live shows available for fans. The War Memorial and Performing Arts Centre puts on Opera, Ballet and Theatrical performances, and venues like the Fillmore have great live music.
