Ice skating in London

By: Rosendo Iwanyszyn

Somerset House. Ice skating in the heart of London doesn't get any better than at Somerset House, with the grand 18th-century courtyard providing a stunning skating venue during the holiday season.

Up until the 27 January 2008, skaters can enjoy a selection of special sessions including ?Late Skate,? with the drama and romance of torch-lit skating on Fridays and Saturdays across the season, and ?Lunchtime Skate,? ideal for a quick spin between 12.30pm and 2.30pm. Somerset House's ice rink is also open on New Year's Eve.

Skaters at Somerset House are also treated to the magnificent sight of a 40ft Christmas tree decorated by Tiffany's.

Kew Gardens. Kew Gardens' ice rink is set in front of the Temperate House, a magnificent Victorian glass structure. The rink is a huge 1000-square-meter enclosure with capacity for 250 people and is open over the holiday season to the 6 January 2008. Skating sessions run from 10am to 10pm daily, and visitors can purchase a joint ?Gardens and Skating? ticket, which includes admission to the Henry Moore Exhibition as well as a spin on the ice.

Skating at Kew Gardens in the evening is a wonderful way to enjoy this venue: it's not every visitor who gets to see the gardens twinkling with lights in the darkness.

Hyde Park. Winter Wonderland in Hyde Park is a complete festive experience! As well as a 1400-square-meter ice rink (the largest in the capital), there's a toboggan slide, and a 50-meter high observation wheel from which to enjoy spectacular views over the park and surrounding areas.

Visitors will also be able to hear carol singers and grab themselves some unusual gifts at the German Christmas market.

Hyde Park's Winter Wonderland is open to the 6 January 2008.

Natural History Museum. The museum's gardens are the attractive setting for this winter skating rink, which sits at the foot of the Romanesque museum building. Overshadowed by delicately-lit tree branches and posed against the backdrop of the magnificent museum building, this is one truly scenic skating rink! There's the addition of a junior rink for younger skaters with ice marshals to give anyone who needs it a helping hand. And for those who just want to watch friends and family take to the ice, there's a rink-side caf? bar.

The Natural History Museum skating rink is open to the 20 January 2008, including New Year's Eve.

So while anyone in city over the holidays might not get to skate on a frozen River Thames, they can at least enjoy the next best thing.
