The vast majority of the western world recognize Christmas. Actually, even many people who are Muslim celebrate Christmas! Yet, very few people are aware of all of the interesting tidbits surrounding the most popular holiday in the world.

For instance, did you know that finding a spider web on the morning of Christmas is believed to be a sign of good luck in the Ukraine? Or that the concept of kissing below a mistletoe hails from Scandinavia? How about the concept that hiding stuff in Christmas pudding comes from the centuries past? There are lots of such interesting trivia nearly no one is aware of these days. Below are some interesting categories of Christmas facts.

The History of Christmas

While Christmas is now known to be a celebration of the coming of Christ into this world, a similar celebration was marked at the same time of the year well before his birth. The date Christmas Day also represents the winter solstice on the Roman calendar, which was marked in ancient Rome along with a few other winter festivals. Other Christmas traditions, such as using the artificial Christmas tree, have much to do with winter solstice holidays. For example, non believers would bring evergreen trees inside at the time of the winter solstice to mark the return of life which would arrive when winter came to an end and spring began. There you have it, Christmas has a really interesting past!

Eating Around Christmas

So many people consume Christmas pudding, and this tradition dates back hundreds of years to when people used to eat spiced porridge. Have you ever considered Buche de Noel, a very popular traditional Christmas cake? As you are no doubt familiar, this cake comes from in France and means "Christmas log". Naturally most people in the english speaking world call this a Yule Log. It is usually a rolled sponge cake, containing Marzipan and meringue. This dates back to very old times.

Have you considered candy canes? Were you aware that sugar used to be very expensive centuries ago? Because of that, candy was only consumed on very special occasions such as Christmas. That's how the custom of enjoying candy canes during Christmas time originated. Also, people ate sugar during lent as far back as the time of Christ, because sugar was known to have medicinal purposes. I'm sure you didn't realize that.

And have you considered Christmas cookies? I'll tell you, they've been a part of holidays dating back way before the bit of Christ. Cookies have been enjoyed for a very long time, additionally cookies have been eaten around Christmas time since the 1500's. Heck, they were loved in the US back during the 1600's!

There are a precious few puzzling bits about Christmas. There are many more about the celebration, trees, decorations, food, music, and more. Look around a little, and tell your family members with all the things you find.
