Jobseekers: An Alternative Picture

By: Audry Jolie

There are many things which may inspire someone to start looking for employment elsewhere. Here''s a quick rundown of the most common.

Some people are just never satisfied. They always want more, whether it''s money, power, status or simply an extra few rungs on the career ladder. These people are eternal job seekers. They always want to know what might be out there and what could improve their circumstances, even if they never act on this knowledge.

Similarly, some people continually seek to be challenged. Most of all they fear boredom in the workplace and the minute this fateful emotion is detected they''re on the lookout for something new.

A simple change of mentality may also inspire a career move. If in days of youth you belonged to the ever-ambitious or the challenge-seeking category, it could be that now you feel you''ve achieved enough and are willing to relax a little more in terms of your career accomplishments, and need a change of working environment as a result.

Another common one: a change of priorities in your life. Perhaps you have a new addition to your family and are looking for less working hours or more flexibility within your job in order to accommodate your new arrival. Or maybe you have simply had enough hard work and you would simply like to have more time to relax and pursue your hobbies and personal interests.

A change of location may also inspire a change of employment. Particularly if you are making a move from the countryside to the city, or vice versa, your range of job opportunities may be entirely different depending on your circumstances and your field of work.

Last but not least, there is the disillusioned jobseeker. Almost all of us have fallen into this unfortunate category at some point in our lives. This is when your current job simply isn''t cutting it anymore, you are in something of a work rut and you want to know what else could be out there waiting for you.

If you do want to make a move, try talking to your friends and family first - the people that know you best may provide you with a few home truths you couldn''t otherwise see for yourself. Secondly, try consulting an online source of information such as the Guardian jobs website or their careers pod cast. This simple exercise in research could open up a world of possibilities that you never knew existed.
