Laser eye surgery Frequently Asked Questions

By: Clemente Vaughner

Does laser surgery always work? No, but it does enjoy a phenomenally high rate of success. In a huge, worldwide study conducted over many years, over 95 percent of patients with low to moderate nearsightedness or astigmatisms enjoyed normal or nearly normal vision after their first treatment.

Can you be too young or too old for laser surgery? Yes. You should not get laser surgery done until your eyes have fully developed, which has usually happened by the age of 20 or 21. Also, due to the deterioration in the eye that occurs with old age, it is not really worth doing it if you are over the age of 70.

Will it hurt? The procedure itself is fairly painless, although you may experience some discomfort in the hours after the operation. However, you can alleviate these symptoms with eye drops.

Is it permanent? Yes. Furthermore, the cornea is fairly stable after the age of 21, so it should last as long as you do. A very small number of people have problems further down the line, but these can be corrected with further surgery.

How accurate is the laser? The laser is accurate to within a three-thousandth of a millimetre, and it is this accuracy that enables the laser to sculpt the cornea precisely and painlessly.

Are there any possible long term effects? While laser surgery is too new to have a body of conclusive evidence regarding its long term effects, the studies that have been carried out to date suggest that there are no significant negative effects in the long term.

Could I get both eyes done at once? The eyes need to be done one at a time. While you could get them done on the same day, this is not generally a good idea, as it will usually be impractical and uncomfortable to experience the after effects of surgery in both eyes at once.

Can I wear contact lenses after laser surgery? The vast majority of patients do not need contact lenses at all after laser surgery. However, if the surgery was not a complete success, it is possible to wear contact lenses afterwards, although you will need to reintroduce them gradually.
