Laser eye surgery Q and A

By: Clemente Vaughner

What, if any, are the risks of laser eye surgery? While some people experience problems with glare and light sensitivity for a few weeks after surgery, more serious complications, such as unwanted tissue growth and infection, are rare and can generally be treated.

How long before I can work? You can be back at work a couple of days after laser surgery, although it is recommended that you should avoid using heavy machinery until you are fully recovered.

How long before I can drive? You should leave it at least two weeks to give yourself time to adjust to the changes in your eye before you get behind the wheel.

How long does the recovery process last? For the first six hours after the operation, you will experience blurred vision, light sensitivity, and eye irritation. These should be almost completely gone by the following day, but you should carry on using the eyedrops for a week after surgery.

What should I do while recovering? You do not need to avoid using your eyes, and watching TV, using a computer, or reading will not have any adverse effects. Most normal activities that do not place any pressure on the eye can be done the day after surgery. You should however, avoid swimming for four days, and under no circumstances should you rub or squeeze the eye.

Is it worth getting it done if you are over 50? The fine focusing lens inside your eye tends to firm up as you grow older, making reading without glasses more difficult as you grow older. While there is nothing that laser surgery can do about this, it can still help with other focal distances.

Will my vision be fixed forever? The effects of laser surgery are permanent, and do not wear off as such, but if your eye changes over time, then you may need minor corrective surgery to put it right.

Might laser surgery make my vision worse? It is highly unlikely, but can happen if there are serious complications during the surgery. In most cases, however, this can be fixed with further surgery.
