From the Beatles on, I ate, drank and slept music. Day and night time, I quietly charted my course toward being a Rock Star. The ironic half was I believed I used to be going to do it sitting behind a drumkit. My folks purchased me a 5-piece no title drumset, and for the following couple of years, I performed together with albums by the Who and Uncommon Earth. And I actually dug it. However then- one superb summer season day in 1968, I heard something that would change my life. I was with my dad in the automobile stereo department at a Sears, when I heard a sound I’d by no means heard before. It was rock music, positive, however the guitars sounded not like something I’d ever heard. It was my first exposure to the almighty Jimi Hendrix. And that sound was INCREDIBLE. Within per week, I’d sold those drums and acquired an electrical guitar. And now, I had to study to play it! Which of course meant I’d want a guitar lesson or two. However I had a challenge forward of me. I was (and still am, in fact) left-handed. I couldn't find an teacher who would agree to show me the way to play guitar in the position that felt pure to me. In hindsight, I’m glad I didn’t. It’s onerous picking up simply any previous guitar and rocking out when it’s strung backwards. In any case, I lastly discovered the man (he also insisted I play right-handed, but he requested nicely. J). His identify was Don- he drove to my home for my weekly lesson, and the teachings have been only $1.50 each!!! Gasoline and different bills had been much less then, however still. Yes, it was a looong time ago. Don was a rustic participant, just about a rhythm guitar participant only. However he was affected person, and he was a down-to-earth good guy. Nonetheless- once I received previous the Mary Had a Little Lambs and the basic chords, I told him that I wanted to go a lot further down the highway to a place referred to as Solo Heaven. I remember I asked Don if he might teach me the guitar solo from Chicago’s ’25 or 6 to four’. At the time, it was a groundbreaking piece of work. Sort of like hearing Paul Gilbert for the first time in the present day. Sadly, Don admitted that fast lead solos like these I used to be seeking weren’t his forte. He left me with this recommendation- “you wish to learn to guitar solo? Play along together with your favorites. Copy their riffs and solos by enjoying together with the albums and tapes.” Great recommendation that I took from him. All advised, I took classes from him for about a year earlier than striking out on my own. But you understand what? I came upon one thing very important. I discovered that taking the time to study the fundamentals made learning these leads pretty straightforward and tons of fun. From that point on, I was capable of kind of break down what was being performed, and then build it up again in my very own style. And for that, I will likely be ceaselessly grateful to that humble guitar teacher for educating me the ABC’s before I attempted to put in writing novels. Thanks, Don.
