Lisbon travel guide

By: Caron Kristan

When most Brits go on holiday to Portugal, Lisbon, or more precisely its airport, is just the point of entry. But the capital is cause for a holiday in itself. It is undeniably beautiful, perched on the banks of the Rio Tejo with its history portrayed through picturesque architecture spread across seven hills.

It doesn''t take itself too seriously or worry about impressing as much as other European capitals do. This makes it feel rather provincial and quaint making visitors seem relaxed. Because of this atmosphere, most tourists as well as the locals are happy to just sit back and take it all in instead of rushing from museum to gallery to show.

To get your bearings as well as a breathtaking view of the city and beyond, cross the 25 de Abril bridge, heading out of the city, and climb the 109m Christ the King statue, inspired by the Christ the Redeemer statue in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

There is a lot to see in Lisbon so buy a Lisboa Card from tourist info centres. You can purchase one-, two-, or three-day cards, which cover your public transport needs and give you free entry to 26 museums.

Speaking of museums, the National Museum of Ancient Art is a must. It is home to Portugal''s best art collections including Portuguese sculptures and paintings from the 13th to 19th centuries. The museum is housed in a 17th-century palace, so the building itself is striking.

Portugal is a famous seafaring nation and this is highlighted and celebrated in the Museu de Marinha, Naval Museum. Displays focus on sailing vessels but also house many of the treasures the Portuguese sailors brought home.

Portugal has veritable collection of UNESCO World Heritage sites for a relatively small country. Two of these sites are in Lisbon; the Jeronimos Monastery and the Tower of Belem.

A national landmark, the monastery is a pure architectural gem. Established in 1496 it took much of the following century to build and is styled in an elaborate Manueline design, which blends late Gothic and Renaissance styles. It has reminders of Portugal''s naval past in many of its sculptures and statues.

The Belem Tower next door was built around the same time and uses the same architectural style. Its exterior also features ornate maritime carvings. The views from the top are particularly noteworthy.

No doubt you''ll want a soft place to rest your tired feet and head after all your exploring and people watching. Lisbon''s hotels are cheaper than many other European capitals and breakfast is usually included. Most are located in the heart of the city, but don''t worry if you have to stay further out because Lisbon''s tram system is excellent and a great way to see more of this enchanting city.
