Looking Good in a Restaurant Kitchen: How to Dress a Chef

By: angelina ahongpek

Everyone has an important role within a commercial kitchen, but is there anyone more vital to its smooth, successful operation than the chef? As the head of the kitchen, the chef must dress the part. That's right--fashion doesn't stop with a server's bow tie and waiter's gloves--it extends into the kitchen, as well.
Black and white checked cook pants are a staple in many commercial kitchens, and with good reason. They are designed to be baggy and loose-fitting for comfort in such a hot environment, but it's the design that catches the attention of many fashionistas. The checkered design is effective at masking all sorts of stains which could otherwise create an unkempt appearance.
While a kitchen's chef may want to wear a cool, loose t-shirt, many sacrifice a degree of comfort to wear a chef coat for a more elegant, sophisticated appeal. Because of this sacrifice, it is not uncommon to see a chef with a neckerchief close at hand.
But what about the most impressive part of a chef's attire--that tall, white hat? This often-times white chef hat--sometimes referred to as a toque--is both practical and fashionable. Sure, it serves the same purpose as any other hat by keeping hair out of your soup and salad, but it is also a status symbol. Particularly in a kitchen that is visible to a restaurant's patrons, the tall chef's hat lets everyone know exactly who the head of the kitchen is.
