Looking for Jobs

By: Audry Jolie

2009 is not a good year for those in search of a job. As well as the large crop of new graduates who have just entered into the 'real world' of employment, many people have been faced with redundancy in the last 12 months and are now busy battling with the job market, searching for opportunities.

If you have found yourself in this rather bleak situation there are a few things you can do to help yourself out. Here's a quick look at a few possibilities:

Widen your net as far as possible, when it comes to the hunt itself. Joining multiple agencies and uploading your CV to as many relevant websites as you can find, will help to improve your chances of finding a suitable form of employment. If you stick to a small field, you're opportunities will be far more limited and chances are you will be on the dole for longer.

Don't just head back to the job centre when it's absolutely necessary, try to show your eagerness by going regularly to check if any new opportunities have arisen. Your dedication may be rewarded.

Try to think about what contacts you've made whilst working in jobs you've had in the past. It could be that after a few well placed phone calls an unadvertised opportunity is suddenly made available to you. Use your friends and friends of friends, too. After all, it's not what you know, it's who you know.

In the meantime you could think of ways in which to improve your CV and hopefully increase your employability. It is important to employers to see that you are a person who likes to use their time constructively.

Volunteering is also a great way to use up some of your unwanted free time. Not only will you be giving something back to society, you will increase your work experience and potentially make some great new friends in the process.

Keep trying and remain focused and eventually something will turn up. The recession can't last forever so stay positive and keep an open mind.
