Luxor in Southern Egypt has been called the "world''s greatest open air museum". This is thanks mainly to the number of well preserved remains from antiquity existing in Luxor, once the site of the ancient Egyptian city of Thebes. There are many unique attractions in Luxor for the intrepid traveller; here are a few of them. Luxor Temple is actually a complex of temples on the east bank of the Nile which demands exploration. While not as large and imposing as the complex at Karnak, Luxor temple should perhaps be the first stop in your tour of the many ancient temples in and around Luxor. The Karnak Temple complex is usually known simply as Karnak, and is an impressively vast collection of ruined temples and other buildings. Karnak has four distinct zones or precincts, one of which is open to the public ? the Precinct of Amun Re. A proper exploration of the Karnak Temple complex takes all day, and must be seen to be believed. The Valley of the Kings is on the West Bank of the Nile ? opposite Luxor - and was the site of Pyramid construction for over 500 years. There are many guided tours which can be booked in Luxor that perhaps present the best way to explore the Valley of the Kings. When you need to take a break from touring the wealth of ancient monuments and tombs, a visit to one of the many bustling souks ? open air markets ? in Luxor will certainly catch your attention. Haggling over the price of souvenirs is like a sport to the vendors, and it is even mildly offensive not to haggle over price, so don''t be shy and drive a hard bargain! One of the most popular activities for tourists in Egypt is taking at least a short cruise down the Nile. From large luxury cruisers that travel for weeks, to the opportunity to take a day out in a small traditional Dhow, you''ll find a wealth of options for experiencing the river that has been the life blood of Egypt for thousands of years. If you are prepared to travel, a visit to the Cairo museum is well worth the effort. The star feature is the Royal Mummy Room, which is home to nine royal mummies from the era of the Pharaohs. The touring and travel options available can be researched online in advance of your trip. The visit to Cairo, for example, is possible via a short plane flight, or alternatively an overnight train. There is so much of the ancient world to explore in and around Luxor, so a little research prior to your visit is probably the best way to make the most of your visit to Egypt.
