If your job is getting you down, or you just feel you have been doing it for too long, it might be worth thinking about a career switch. This can be difficult, especially if you have been doing your current job for a long time, but if you approach it in the right way, it is perfectly possible in most cases. Before you do anything else, it can be worth spending a bit of time thinking about your current job. What is it that you do not like about it? Is it anything that could be corrected without changing course completely? You might find that your current job actually is not as bad as you think. If you do decide that you need to completely change tack in your career, it is time to do some hard thinking about what you really would like to do. Ask yourself what type of tasks you truly enjoy, and try to think of careers that would involve more of these. Although it can be fun to get carried away dreaming of a new career, if you want it to happen you will have to be realistic. Try to separate your escapist fantasies from your achievable ambitions, as it can be easy to confuse the two if you are not thinking clearly. If you have a good idea about the type of job you would rather be doing, it might be worth seeking someone out that actually does that job. On the whole, most people will be more than willing to talk to you about their work. If possible, ask if you can shadow them for a day so you can get a better idea of what would be involved. After you have decided what it is that you really want to do, you need to think pragmatically about the steps you will need to take to achieve your goal. Find out how long it will take to retrain, and how much it will cost. Investigate all the available funding options, such as career development loans and charitable bursaries. One good way to approach a career change is to try doing something related on a part time basis, such as volunteering or doing a course. By doing this, you will get a stronger idea of the type of work you would be doing, and it could stand you in good stead when it comes to getting a new job. Switching wholesale to a new career is not the only option. You could consider going part time or freelance with your current job in order to give you an opportunity to pursue your new career objectives without completely abandoning your safety net.
