Manchester properties available within the hip Northern Quarter

By: Trish Jacque

The Northern Quarter is a district of Manchester, on the North-Eastern edge of the city centre, between Piccadilly and Ancoats, and bordered to the east by Newton Street and the West by Shudehill.

This area has a long established reputation as Manchesters bohemian quarter, popular with artists, musicians, and students alike. There are lots of independent clothes and music shops, as well as plenty of fashionable bars, restaurants, and cafes. There is also an urban fashion street market held every Saturday on the corner of Market Street and Tib Street.

The arty feel of the Northern Quarter is emphasised by the many sculptures and artworks that adorn its streets and buildings. A good example of this is the giant galvanised daffodils that appear to be sprouting from the outside walls of Afflecks Palace.

There are lot of Victorian buildings in the Northern Quarter, partly due to the areas conserved status, and many of these have been converted into stylish modern apartments. However, there are a good few new developments in the area too.

One of the most popular warehouse conversions in the area is the Tib Street Apartments. Centrally located within the Northern Quarter, this Victorian warehouse has been tastefully renovated to retain as many period features as possible while creating luxury apartments within.

If you are looking for modern apartment living with outside space, then the Sorting House meets this criteria. Apartments are housed within the historic Royal Mail building and the complex features a landscaped Japanese garden at its centre.

A now defunct department store was converted with the help of Wayne Hemingway, cofounder of the Red or Dead label, to create the Birchin building. This development was designed to provide affordable, chic and modern living spaces within the Northern Quarter, just across from Afflecks Palace.

A state of the art new build with fantastic views across the city is the 20 storey Lighthouse building. As well as close to 170 flats, the building is also home to its own restaurants and shops, with apartment interiors created by design guru Terence Conran.
