Marakech One of the most popular tourist destinations in Morocco, Marrakech is a thriving historical centre with an overwhelming list of things to see and do. Don't leave without browsing the varied bazaars, admiring the central square of Djemma el Fna and visiting the Saadian Tombs. The Marjorelle Gardens also provide a beautiful and tranquil escape from the hectic pace of city life. Fez Fez is worth a visit simply to see its wonderfully preserved medieval architecture. The city is a melting point of ancient and modern culture, with the historical atmosphere of areas like the Jewish quarter contrasting with the up-beat vibe in some of the more contemporary shopping locations. Must-see attractions include the medina city of Fes El Bali, the Merenid tombs and the Royal Palace. Chefchapuen Escape from the hustle and bustle of Morocco's larger cities to stay in this delightful town in the middle of the Rif mountains. More popular with gap year students than families due to its famous cannabis culture, the town is nevertheless a wonderful place to visit for travellers of all ages. Visitors can wander along the narrow streets admiring the pretty white houses with their colourful painted doors, or hike in the surrounding countryside. Merzouga Merzouga is a desert town which, on first glance, seems to have come straight out of the set of a Hollywood movie. It is sheltered by the rolling Erg Chebbi sand dunes and surrounded by white desert as far as the eye can see. The town is a great place to see the 'other' Morocco, where locals still live a life relatively unaffected by modern ideals and commercialism. Travel to Morocco is relatively cheap, thanks to budget flights and low-cost hotel accommodation. Visitors are advised to respect local tradition by covering up outside tourist-focused zones, and it's wise to protect yourself against theft by taking out travel insurance. Take the appropriate precautions, and your Moroccan trip could end up being the holiday of a lifetime.
