Munich - Beyond the beer

By: Caron Kristan

One of the unusual things that happens in a financial crisis is that things get cheaper. Even although everyone is indoors not spending anything, the prices in the real world are plummeting as desperate business owners try and tempt the customers in. As odd as it may seem, the middle of a financial crisis is the best place to be a consumer.

Especially if you are a consumer of luxury goods, and non-more luxurious was the weekend holiday away. People just felt they were superfluous. Now however, they are cheap. Take Munich as an example. When in the past you compared it to London, Paris and Dublin, it was always hard to find cheap accommodation. No longer.

Octopus Travel has a huge range of Munich hotels available at the moment that are massively cheaper than a few years ago and this has made the city into an incredibly cheap destination all round. One of the big problems with London, Paris and Dublin is that even if they are cheaper for hotels, they suffer from expensive cost of living. Munich really doesn''t.

One of the biggest attractions for people visiting Munich is its beer. Munich is world famous for its breweries, and thanks to the low prices it really isn''t as expensive as people would initially think.

The Wei?bier (or Weizenbier, wheat beer) is a speciality from Bavaria, and Helles with its translucent gold colour, is the most popular Munich beer today. Helles and Pils have almost ousted the Munich Dark Beer (Dunkles), which gets its dark colour from burnt malt, the most popular beer in Munich within the 19th century.

There are around 20 major beer gardens, with four of the most famous and popular being located in the Englischer Garten and the largest one in the Hirschgarten. The nightlife in Munich is thriving. There are over 6,000 licensed establishments in the city, especially in Schwabing, which is still the main quarter for students and artists.

Keeping on the beer trail you can visit the touristy Hofbr?uhaus, one of the oldest breweries in Munich, or take in Kultfabrik and Optimolwerke, former industrial areas that have been turned into a pub and club paradise; and Munich''s world famous gay quarter is in Isarvorstadt. You''ll be kept busy.

There has never been a better time to travel abroad and Munich is doubly perfect because of its close proximity to the UK and the affordable nature of the city itself. You wont regret it.
