Music to Help Your Baby Get to Sleep

By: Kathy Johnston

There are prominent theories by scientists that classical music might make your baby more intelligent, and exposing your baby to music is part of what we as parents do to acquaint them with all the sights and sounds of their world. At the very least, music may unquestionably aid in quieting your baby and put him in a restful state at bedtime or nap time. What are some good music options for your baby?

Almost any music that is calming for you may be used to relax your baby as well. There are great Baby Einstein classical collections of Mozart or Bach for babies. The music of Enya has always calmed me and can be very soothing to your baby as well. Baby Einstein makes a long list of helpful baby accessories including music and toys. We offer many of these items on our site.

While your baby is alert, there are many musical passages from popular kids' movies that can stimulate his senses. Disney is obviously a great choice for this. Spiritual and soft gospel music are also good choices to help the baby get to rest. Amy Grant was a childhood favorite of mine.

White noise, in the form of a fan (not directed right at the baby), or from sound machines that simulate the sound of an ocean or rain can be restful as well, and can block out noise from the home. You don't need to create an artificially silent environment for the baby, however, since that can make it harder for them to get to sleep when the home's rhythms and noises get back to normal.

If you're not familiar with classical music, this is a great time for you to explore as well, if it's not already part of your life. The same music that's helping your baby get to sleep can help soothe your own nerves and provide a wonderful time of bonding and restfulness for you and your baby together. Most of this advice is directly a result of listening to music with my first and second children!
