Mykonos beaches and attractions

By: Caron Kristan

Mykonos is a popular Greek island holiday destination for tourists in the Aegean sea. It has two main parts, Ano Mera and Chora, or Mykonos Town as it is also known. Chora is set on the coast, with a beautiful bay and traditional whitewashed buildings and narrow streets all around. Ano Mera is a small village based inland and is almost 8km east from Chora.

Alefkandra, or Little Venice, is a district of Mykonos Town that is famed for its medieval architecture, most notably its two storey medieval houses that stretch along the coast. Their multicoloured wooden balconies make for a picturesque town and the restaurants and bars that are dotted along the bay here are a great place to watch the sun set over the sea.

One of the most popular attractions in Mykonos Town is The Windmills. The Windmills are remnants of the wheat production industry that was once the main industry on the island. This is a popular spot to watch the beautiful sunsets over Mykonos and affords wonderful views over the Little Venice district too.

You can learn all about Mykonos and its surrounding Greek islands and history by making a trip to the Archaeological Museum of Mykonos. Located near to the bus station in Mykonos Town, it is open Tuesday through Sunday from 8.30am until 3pm and houses an extensive collection of archaeological finds from Mykonos and nearby islands.

The house of a famous local sea captain dating back to the 1700s has been transformed into the Folklore Museum. This is a wonderful place for children to learn all about local legends and folk music, with regular performances, storytelling and an extensive collection of exhibits open every day, except Sunday.

One of the most interesting of the islands that neighbours Mykonos is the island of Delos. This is an uninhabited island that is home to several important archaeological sites. You can visit the excavation sites by taking a 30-minute boat trip to Delos, which leave every morning, except for Mondays.

If you are looking to get away from the crowds and are bored of simply sunbathing, then head to the north coast of the island. The beaches here are seldom busy, even in high season, and Ftelia in particular, with its strong northerly winds, makes it an ideal beach for watersports like windsurfing.

The many beaches of Mykonos are incredibly varied. To the north, the beaches are windy, great for watersports, and tend to be far quieter. To the south, the winds disappear making swimming and sunbathing ideal. And to the west, around Mykonos Town, there are more facilities and busier beaches as a result.
