New Delhi is the capital city of India. Construction of New Delhi began very recently in relative terms, in 1911. However, as one of the nine districts of the metropolis of Delhi, New Delhi is part of a larger city that is one of the most ancient in the world. Here are just a few of the attractions you''ll find in and around New Delhi. The Red Fort is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Delhi. This impressive red sandstone fort was built by the Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan, and completed in 1648. As well as a walk around the lush greenery of the gardens surrounding the fortifications, there are several different buildings and areas to explore within. The Chatta Chowk (Covered Bazaar) is between the entrance gate and the fort proper, and is now home to hundreds of souvenir sellers. Be prepared to haggle over price, and try and bring small denomination notes if you think you''ll make a purchase, to avoid being short changed. For an educational experience, you''ll find the Swatantra Sangrama Sangrahalaya (Museum of the Independence Movement) just after the Chatta Chowk, to the left. This museum charts the independence movement from the 1857 uprising through to the time of the iconic Ghandi. In addition, there are several palaces and other buildings to explore within the Red Fort. The Diwan-i-Khas (Hall of Private Audience) is a personal favourite, a completely marble built building that the emperor used to entertain VIP guests. There are three UNESCO World heritage sites in Delhi. One of these is Humayun''s Tomb, in the south of the city. The top class gardens around the tomb were extensively renovated in 2003, and like the gardens at the Red Fort, this oasis of green is attractive enough in its own right. The tomb of Humayun was built for the second Moghul emperor, and is thought to be the blueprint for the more famous Taj Mahal. The Qutub complex is another of the UNESCO World heritage sites in Delhi. The most famous structure in the complex is the Qutub Minar, an imposing 72.5 metre tall, this minaret was in fact it was the tallest ''skyscraper'' in the world when building was completed in the 14th Century, a process that took well over a hundred years. Delhi Zoo (officially known as the National Zoological Park) is home to some of the iconic wildlife of India, and the place to go to see tigers and elephants.
