New Year, New You

By: Wilber Gjokaj

If the winter blues are getting you down, then why not put a little spice back into your life with a top-to-toe New Year makeover? A little self-pampering won''t just make you look fabulous; it can also boost your confidence, improve your relationships, and get you feeling like a million dollars.

If there''s one way to create maximum effect with minimum effort, it''s by getting a new hair cut. A style and colour that suits you can transform lack-lustre locks and give your face an entirely new shape.

Instead of demanding a cut modeled on your favourite celebrity, find a skilled stylist who can help suggest a look to suit you. This is easier said than done, so don''t despair if you and your hairdresser don''t hit it off straight away. Consult your friends for recommendations, ask at your salon for a stylist with a certain level of experience, and never be afraid to say if you''re dubious about your cut.

When your tresses are sleek and shiny, the next step is to revamp your makeup drawer. Throw out unused items and anything that''s past its best before date; and before you go on a cosmetics hunt make sure you know which colours and shades suit your skin type.

If you and cosmetics have failed to hit it off, then consider a makeup tuition session at your local beauty salon, or take advantage of the free makeovers available at many larger department stores. A beautician will be able to advise you on the shades and tones that fit your skin type.

Of course, no makeover would be complete without a transformed wardrobe. A style overhaul needn''t cost you a fortune ? jazz up old outfits with new, fashionable accessories, combine separate pieces that you wouldn''t normally put together, and throw out all those old clothes that you haven''t worn for years.

When you do hit the high street, be cautious about what you buy. Don''t make spontaneous purchases, and ensure that everything you choose fits well and represents something that you would really wear. You can pick up some great deals in budget high street stores such as New Look, so don''t assume that you need to spend a fortune on designer dresses in order to stay in fashion. Teem budget buys with vintage jewellery for an instant cutting-edge look.

Once you''ve styled yourself beautiful, remember that your new look will need maintenance. A makeover isn''t something that can be accomplished overnight ? the key to looking stunning all the time is getting into some good habits. Persevere; resist the temptation to slump back into your comfort zone, and you''ll have a new you that will last the entire year.
