Off to Bali

By: Caron Kristan

The Indonesian island of Bali, famed the world over as the ''Island of the Gods'', opens up an eclectic new world before you, its landscape with mountains, rugged coastlines and fine beaches, rice terraces and barren volcanic hills, all just as varied as its culture which blends traditional Hindu spiritualism with modern tastes in shopping and partying. To the many people who head there from all over the world, it is something of a paradise on earth.

Of course, Bali''s Hindu heritage remains strong and ever-present even in the island''s modern-day culture. Everywhere you turn you will come across temples, observe ceremonies and daily offerings, all of which are rewarding spectacles.

The countless Hindu temples are mandated across every village by religious law. Every settlement must build three temples: one at each side as well as one in the centre for the everyday activity of the community. Of course wealthy places may have many more, and in Bali the nine directional temples are the largest and most prominent.

The Uluwatu Temple in the south is very popular with visitors, whilst many others are found in more difficult-to-access locations, situated as they are to protect the island''s inhabitants from dark forces.

Of course for such a beautiful, sun-spoilt island, it is hardly surprising that there is a rich array of beaches where you can indulge in the warmth. Only in the south-east which contains large swathes of mangrove forest and on the Bulit Peninsula where tall cliffs line the sea''s edge will you not find the kind of pristine beaches that edge the Indian Ocean all over the rest of the island.

For those of an artistic bent, Bali has so much to offer too. You''ll find traditional and modern exhibits all over, particularly in Ubud where the artists flock to museums and workshops. Local artists, both living and dead, often have their work displayed here, as do international artists connected to the island.

For an ideal way to relax in the beautiful landscape, the hot springs to be found all over the island are a splendid choice. If you go to Air Banjar you''ll get to enjoy the waters surrounded by lush greenery. In the north eastern mountains meanwhile you can go and spend some well-deserved hours indulging in comfort at Toya Bungkah by the side of Lake Bratan.

Bali today attracts a diverse crowd, such is the range of wonders that it offers. From the young backpacker to the rich experienced traveller, it has plenty to see and do, whoever you are.
