When she wanted to get her first dog, this female painter was eight. Leaving the young girl with a lasting impression was the small Boston terrier before it died within the year. For the noble pets, they hold a special place in her heart. As an accomplished painter, she specializes in portraits of dogs. Sunday afternoons have been spent by her reading every dog book and magazine she could find whenever she is in the public library. Showing dogs in trials and dog shows, she first wanted to become a professional dog handler before her art career. She was 13 and all of her free time was spent drawing and sketching the animals in different dog shows. Painting with oils as well as making portraits of dogs were things a friend encouraged her to try at 16. This specialty of hers is something that she chose even if she is quite capable of painting landscapes, abstracts, sea scapes, and other subjects. A fascinating little mongrel restored to health and adopted as a mascot by the animal humane association called charlie black was what her first painting was of. It is already difficult to photograph a black dog but even more challenging to paint one. She did a painting of the statue of a jacket found in Tutankhamen's tomb and it was an unusual picture. In the background she painted appropriate Egyptian symbols. Portraits of other pets like horses are sometimes requested from her. The help she gets from her husband is both tangible and psychological. He came up with a specially designed table that holds her paints and brushes. Showing her work, she uses the specially crafted easels and display stands she made and stained herself. It was a three by four foot portrait of a Labrador which was her biggest portrait. The smoother dogs are easier to paint than those with longer coats. No dog is ever posed. There will never be a dog that holds its head just right. For an hour, she observes the animal carefully and from this she is able to remember its sheen, the color of its coat, its typical stance, and the evident personality or character traits it may have. As what plenty of people agree on, she has skills in putting these traits onto a canvas. She makes use of snapshots given by the owners. Should the owners have no pictures to give then she can take it herself and then blow it up on the screen. With the background and all, she lets the people she paints for decide. For some, they like sceneries while the rest want it plain. Per month, she is only able to do one portrait due to family commitments. She may have housework to do or she takes vacations.
