Online Addiction

By: Chu Yankovitch

Gambling addiction is one of the most rapidly growing afflictions in Britain today. For many years alcohol and drug addiction have been the major (some would argue only) recognised addictions, but now increasing resources are being put into helping people fight gambling addiction.

Accordingly, a charity in the south-west recently opened the first ever residential gambling addiction centre, it has, perhaps unsurprisingly, been full since the moment it opened.

The internet is often cited as one of the major reasons for the growth of gambling addiction in the UK. The UK hasn''t really ever had casinos, or at least not on the scale of the famous casinos in Las Vegas or Monaco, but with the arrival of the internet people all across the country have been able to access games where they can wager money.

And they have, in ever growing quantities. Online bingo has been a phenomenal success in recent years, and for a period was the fastest growing industry in the UK. The online casino industry has also grown astonishingly and has promoted the growth of poker as it has developed.

The next development in online gaming is also expected to lead to a greater focus on money changing hands. New companies have entered the market that promise to allow gamers to wager over the outcome of matches, usually based on skills games rather than the traditional casino type games, but nonetheless with a gambling element.

Of course, we should automatically assume that the online gaming industry is responsible for the rise in gambling. Online casinos carry warnings on their websites about the dangers associated with gambling online and many have links on their websites to gambling awareness and support groups.

An increasing number of websites have also put measures in place to try and stop people spending more than they should, but it is very hard to keep people from adding more money to an account. As all the money that changes hands is electronic, it''s easy for people to make themselves think they''re not spending real money.

Another reason why it is harsh to blame online gaming websites is that their greatest flaw is the medium. As playing online is not like entering a real casino, where you can see people winning and losing, it''s easy to think that you''re in control because you''re in the peace and quiet of your own room. Online casinos have been a great success because they''re entertaining and fun, but it''s important to remember that you can always lose money.
