Orlando''s beach spots

By: Mathilda Riesland

When you think of Orlando, beaches probably aren''t the first thing that comes to mind. The city is more famous for its world-class theme parks ? but there are also some beautiful bathing spots close by. If you''re prepared to travel, then all of these first rate beaches are within a two-hour drive of Orlando.

Daytona Beach: Home of ''Race Week'' and the Daytona 500, Daytona Beach is known as much for its status as a car racing destination as for its white sands. If you''re not a motorhead, however, then don''t be put off by this racy reputation ? with 23 miles of unspoiled coastline, Daytona is also a favourite haunt of sun-worshippers and swimmers.

Canaveral National Seashore: If the Orlando crowds are beginning to pall then Canaveral offers a perfect escape. Located between Daytona and Cocoa Beach, this 25-mile strip of sand is among the least frequented beaches in Florida. The lack of facilities discourages last crowds, but otherwise Canaveral is well worth a visit. Plenty of salt marshes and lagoons mean it''s also a great spot for wildlife watching.

Cocoa Beach: This popular surfer''s beach is where the young, hip and trendy hang out. It''s a typical Floridian seaside destination with its own pier, and plenty of cafes where you can relax and drink cocktails out of the burning sun. The beach can get busy, and you''re not guaranteed to find a spot away from the crowds, but Cocoa''s numerous attractions make it worthwhile braving the crowds.

Satellite Beach: An hour''s drive from central Orlando, Satellite Beach is a large and thriving coastal community. It tends to be packed with sunbathers ? but the warm waters and shallow bathing area are ideal if you''re swimming with kids, and it has a great family atmosphere.

St Petersburg: The east coast doesn''t have a monopoly on beautiful beaches ? if you''re prepared to drive for a couple of hours then the west coast boasts a few real gems as well. St Pete''s is a great location, famed for its watersports and delicious local seafood. With the town to explore too, it''s worth making this a day trip from Orlando.

Clearwater: Another West Coast gem, Clearwater does just what it says on the label. It''s a white sand paradise beloved of sun-worshippers, and visitors can often spot gambling dolphins. If you''re feeling like an adrenaline rush then there are plenty of watersports to indulge in, and socialites will enjoy the chance to hobnob with the local yachting community.

There are plenty of great beaches within an easy drive of Orlando, so it''s well worth packing your bathing suit and towel. A dip in the sea is the perfect way to cool off after a few days of theme park entertainment.
