Otheside of Prague

By: Caron Kristan

The splendid city of Prague has of course seen a lot in recent years. The period of Soviet rule followed by the sudden and dramatic fall of Communism brought some difficult times. However the city has even more recently come into its own, with industry and prosperity bringing fortune to the country and attracting tourists in droves.

It is of course not as cheap as it once most certainly was. Nonetheless it is still as beautiful, and so many flock here with good reason. Head to the old town for some spectacular sights, in particular the famous old castle. The more up-to-date side of town on the other hand is a buzzing place, with coffee shops and art galleries all over.

With a rich array of architectural styles blended together in harmony, the Prague cityscape is a dreamlike vision. You will lose yourself down the quaint streets and before the stunning facades of great old buildings.

Yet despite the history that Prague has seen, and sometimes had to endure, the city is confident and forward-looking these days, and its credentials as a cosmopolitan, continental destination are undoubted.

The Old Town is bursting with history. The Astronomical Clock and Gothic Ty Church are spectacular but so are the houses and shops lining the streets.

Ironically called New Town, the area around Wenceslas Square was actually constructed in the 14th century. However, much of it has been modernised or incredibly well preserved. Aside from the world famous square and its bars and restaurants is the National Museum and the multi-coloured Jubilee Synagogue.

When you''re looking for accommodation, you''re sure to be able to find something that suits your needs and budget, whether you want opulent, old-fashioned surroundings or trendy modern townhouse style.

But if you are after a budget-friendly hotel option, Prague can also be your friend. You may have to look further out, but don''t worry, Prague''s public transport system is anything but archaic so you can get into the centre in less than 15 minutes from pretty much any of the surrounding districts and suburbs, many of which are attractive and appealing in their own right.
