Perfecting Your CV

By: Audry Jolie

According to the latest figures, the unemployment figure is now at its highest level since 1997. Though the figures are, apparently, encouraging, showing a slowdown in the number of people finding themselves out of work, it is undeniable that now is the most difficult time in a decade to find a job.

So many people are looking for jobs at the moment that any position that is advertised receives dozens of applicants. That means that if you're out of work and looking for a job, you have to do that little bit extra to make sure that your application form shines out.

So, what sort of stuff should you be trying to do in order to make it through the application stage?

The first thing that you should do is make sure that your CV is in good condition. Your CV reflects on you, so make sure that it looks tidy and is easy to read. Don't clutter it with a mass of writing, it is better to use extra pages than to overcrowd your pages. If you're not sure about how to structure your CV there are many professional templates on the internet that you can use.

The next thing that you should do is emphasise your skills. If you've been able to touch type since you were ten but have no formal qualifications, simply time yourself against the clock. Count how many words you can do in a minute and make sure that is clearly highlighted towards the top of the sheet.

The major thing that an employer will be looking for is experience, but many people looking for jobs right now don't have that much in certain fields. If you're one of these people, make sure that the little experience you do have highlights your personal skills. For example, if you've done shift work, it highlights good timekeeping, conscientiousness, and an ability to work to a schedule. All of these things are basic attributes that any employer would be looking for. Likewise, put down every educational qualification you've ever received, and any extra-curricular activities, if you were the captain of a football team, for example, it shows leadership skills, the ability to work in a team and the importance of motivation.

Many people can feel uncomfortable about drafting their CV as it requires a certain self-promotion that in some ways is decidedly un-British. The only way that you're going to net a job is if you emphasise all your skills, so if you feel uncomfortable, don't undersell yourself, get a friend to help with the drafting.

Finally, even if you have been unsuccessful many times, keep trying. If you're failing to get a full time job, take a look at work experience opportunities in the relevant area, anything that can enhance your CV is worthwhile.
