Pet Painting Suggest Love and Memories Perpetuate Life

By: nicolle tenny

This female graphic artist has little faces looking at her while she works in her home office. There was nothing particularly vibrant and joyful about her work at home, which involved handling form designs and creating ads and coupons. Outside, she is observed by four dogs and four cats.

A new career opened up for her because of those faces. On the way to Texas, she took out the pictures of the animals and decided to paint them on canvas. The colors used in the portrait of the animal are colors she feels reflect thea animal's personality.

When she paints, her purpose is to capture the animals' essence. I can use different colors to paint the animal and project its personality. She and her husband found this dog in Mississippi, and it became the subject of her first painting. It was a dog which never left the couple, and whose color was red.

For her dog's portrait, she decided on green to show his jealous side. She's not the first person to use unusual colors for animal portraits. In 1984, a cajun artist made a painting of a blue dog, inspired by his dog who passed away in 1980.

The blue dog is a standout in her paintings. People may find the blue dog paintings amusing, but there is actually a haunting seriousness in how the artist views his work. The artist intended for each of the paintings to actually have a deep spiritual meaning even if the paintings looked funny. Whatever questions we may have about life are the same questions the dog asks as she stares at us.

Her artwork has to be a reflection of the animal's spirit. She tries to mirror their actions using different patterns and vibrant hues. All the animals she adopted were either from a shelter or were wandering in the streets. She also adopted a dog, the newest in the family, who was wandering from one house to another in the neighborhood.

She started making herself known as a pet portrait painter last summer by placing fliers in vet offices. Give me a picture of the animal and also her personality description, she tells her clients. When she understands the animal, only then does she pick the colors to use. There is a sense of satisfaction that customers get from her portraits that they don't get from other portraits, said the owner.

The energy she exhibits was caught in the bright yellow hue used in the portrait. According to the owner of an art gallery in Memphis, when a person recognizes the subject in a portrait, they would be drawn to it. Even a pet portrait may be viewed and also appreciated.
