Physics Games Improve your Grasp of the Physical World

By: Bill Traind

Understanding the physical world is important whether you’re a student or just a person curious about how the world works. While some people are happy to read physics books, others prefer a different style of learning. Luckily, there are lots of free physics games online that you can play to learn how some of the basic concepts of physics work. In the games, you have to use these concepts to carry out the various game tasks, so the better your understanding of the physics involved, the better you’ll succeed at the game.

Here are just a few of the physics games available, where you can learn while you have fun.

The Egg is a physics game that requires you to get an egg into a basket, but there are twists. You have to drag around a variety of objects that you use to push, bounce, and otherwise cajole your egg into the basket. It’s a great way to learn about concepts like force, work, and leverage.

Color World solidifies your understanding of the color spectrum. It is a physics based game where you are required to change the color of a series of boxes to match the color of the firing ball.

Moon and Sun is another physics game that involves dropping objects onto a platform. But there’s more to it. You have to make the moon and the sun work together to move objects carefully. It reinforces the concepts of the law of gravity and helps players understand how the moon and the sun affect each other.

Ba Boing lets you experiment with springs, magnets, and other tools. In this physics based game, you have to escort various creatures back to their portal by using tools to direct the creatures back to their world, placing tools optimally to convey the creatures back to where they came from.

In the game Ragdoll Pirates, you are required to defend your castle from pirates using a cannon with various shooting capabilities. You have to use the various trajectories to bring the pirates down before they manage to reach the shore.

As you can see, playing games sometimes requires you to develop an understanding of the physical nature of the world and basic concepts like gravity, the electromagnetic spectrum, and force. But with games, you often learn without realizing that you’re learning.

For these reasons, physics games can help children develop their understanding of basic scientific concepts while having fun. Many physics games are appropriate for all ages, and elementary school age children can benefit from playing them. In fact, they can be used as an incentive for children to finish their homework, and then reinforce some of the concepts they are learning in their science classes.

Physics games are no substitute for a sound education, but they can reinforce and introduce concepts in a fun environment. A huge variety of free physics games is available online, so that anyone with an internet connection can take advantage of the fun and learning that these games embody. Learning doesn’t have to be dull, and physics based games show children just how much fun scientific concepts can be.
