Plane Pollution

By: Sal Greet

Air travel is more popular than ever, whether it be for taking a flight from London to Edinburgh, or from Bristol to Bangkok, cheap flights have revolutionised the way we travel. With so many people boarding planes every day, however, the aviation industry is increasingly criticised for the amount of pollution that it produces.

Researchers from Oxford University believe that they have a solution to some of the emissions produced by planes. Simple measures to streamline operations and improve computer systems in control towers could save up to 8% of emissions.

This might not seem like all that much, but the pressure is on the aviation industry to act. With a target already set to reduce emissions by 50% before 2050 and carbons taxes being constantly mooted, that eight percent could make a massive difference.

The researchers offered several suggestions for how these improvements could be made. At present planes have to give each other a wide berth due to inaccuracies in computer systems, this means that many planes spend a lot of time stacked over airports, waiting to land. Another idea is to improve the speed of changeover between landing and taking off, meaning aircraft spend less time with their engines running on the tarmac.

The author of the report suggests that such improvements could be cheaply and quickly introduced, especially in comparison to technological advances which could take a significant amount of time as most planes are kept in service for 30 years or more.

Many might think that carbon emissions are not particularly important to the average customer, but this would be inaccurate. Saving the amount of time that airplanes spend in the air, for example, should reduce on the amount of fuel they use, and with many airlines charging a certain amount of fuel tax, this could see a reduction in price passed onto customers.

Another aspect is that some flight operators offer ''carbon offsetting'' as part of their tickets, with less carbon, this price should also come down, and with shorter times spent loading and unloading luggage, check in times should be shorter.

Of course, at the end of the day, all these savings may end up being minimal. When it comes to going on holiday though, every penny that you can save on transfers and flights is another that you can spend on your hotel or enjoying yourself when you get there.
