Practical ways to reduce your air transport footprint Article

By: Thanh Rabuse

Air transport is one of the biggest worldwide contributors to global warming. In the UK, with the abundance of low-cost airlines coupled with our island location means that, on average, we fly more than any other nation. So this means that British citizens contribute the most to global warming through aviation.

Seeing as our appetite for holidays and travel is not going to dissipate, we need to make our travel more environmentally friendly. You can now offset your CO2 emissions from your flight either at the time of booking, directly with the airline, or through a dedicated CO2 off-setting company.

However, few of us actually think about the CO2 we give off just by getting to and from the airport. If we are honest, it's not really our main concern when booking a holiday, but it should be. If you want to be more environmentally friendly, you should take steps to alter everything you do in favour of the environment.

So what if you drive? If you have a full car, i.e. containing four or five people, the actual level of CO2 per person is not that high. However, the car will be heavier, especially when luggage is taken into account so the total amount of CO2 will be higher.

Seeing as the main UK airports surround London, most people's route to the airport involves a tortuous journey on the M25. As this is one of the country's busiest roads, this usually means crawling along in second gear. You might be surprised to know that you car's CO2 emissions are at their highest when driving under 15 miles per hour.

Modern public transport is usually a better bet and trains are usually the most environmentally friendly forms of transport available. However, in the UK, our trains aren't quite up to scratch when compared to our European counterparts. Some airport services use modern 'green' trains, but others have yet to still rely on older 'dirtier' trains that don't exactly have the environment's best interests at heart. You probably won't know what type you will get until you get to the station.

Another positive choice for the environment is to travel by coach. A full coach means less CO2 emissions per passenger and if it runs on hybrid or bio-fuels then the CO2 'load' per passenger is reduced even further.

easyBus is a good example of a green and affordable airport coach service, with over 66% of its buses meet Euro 4 emissions standards. Visit easybus for more information on prices and their commitment to act on climate change.
