It has long been a priority of the government to encourage people to go to University, over previous years there has been a steady increase in the number of new students, but this year due to the economic crisis the current generation of students is the biggest ever. The attraction of University is obvious, it is an opportunity to get the skills and experience which employers look for, meaning that graduates should get better jobs when they finally leave University. Unfortunately, that''s not always the case, whilst the number of students increases the number of graduate jobs has remained relatively stable. For many students at the moment, then, the biggest challenge of University is finding a job at the end of it. If you want to give yourself as good a chance as possible of getting a great job when you leave University, you need to make sure that you do more than just your degree. University offers unique opportunities for people to get skills and do things that make a CV look really spectacular. Some employers would argue that the best thing that you can do for a CV happens before or after University through the form of a gap year. Gap years offer people the chance to get genuine work experience over a prolonged period, allowing them to develop the vital skills that they will need in the workplace post-Uni. Gap years also give people the chance to travel and, sometimes, to learn new languages. Travelling is a great thing to have on your CV, it shows confidence, outgoing spirit, and an interest in new things whilst the ability to speak other languages is always invaluable. At University, it''s important to strike the balance between academic work, paid work and extra-curricular activities. Universities offer the opportunity for people to become involved in the organisational side of things, whether that be sports teams or societies, and these sorts of organisational, responsible positions can be really important when it comes to proving your capabilities. Another thing to remember is that Universities are great places to make the most of contacts. Many careers departments have links with employers and can help you find internships and job placements that you would never get otherwise. Make sure you make the most of the resources at your University, particularly when it comes to work experience. The final way of guaranteeing that you get a job post-Uni is to get ahead of the game. Whilst it might seem daunting, looking for a job before you leave can reap massive benefits, even if you''re not sure what you want to do, look for short term positions and get out there, it''s always easier to find a job when you have one already.
