Present-Day Music Is Derived From Ancient Greece

Music is an art form which acts as a mirror of social and cultural structures. If the society or the culture of a particular area is degenerating, the music of that place will exhibit the same. Similarly, when the society or the culture is booming, the music will also thrive. Hence, music has a major office in the tracing the history of a country.
Modern music owes much to the Ancient Greeks. In fact, the word "music" is originated from the 9 muses of Ancient Greece - goddesses controlling the arts and sciences. Contemporary musicians refer to their muse, which is someone who has an effect on another person's creative work. Different musical terms, such as tune, melody, rhythm and others have their roots in the Greek language. Yet, when Ancient Greece fell into decline and the Byzantine and Roman Empires collapsed, Greek music stopped developing for a few centuries until it was revived in the 19th century.
Greeks are believed to have considered music a way of worshipping God. Music was also an essential part of their social life. It was played on all kinds of social occasions. As drama was also quite popular in Greece, they also used music when drama was staged.
Greek music is often believed to have lacked harmony. It was largely performed by one singer and not by a chorus as is normally displayed in Greek plays. In Ancient Greece the laws of music were followed very stringently, and one form was not permitted to combine with another. The rules were so strict that the viewers or listeners were not permitted to applaud. The objective of musical shows was not to entertain but to teach common people.
Pythagoras was the first to use numbers to denote musical scales which he identified while studying the differences in sound frequencies of varied length strings of a musical instrument. This concept was introduced to Ancient Greek Music, and Pythagoras became known as the father of music theory. Most musical works are reported to be monophonic. Thus, they were similar to each other. But when musicians began introducing new things to music, Plato considered it sacrilege of the purest form of music.
Contemporary Greek music is a combination of Greek folk music and Eastern and Western influences.
