Reasons to wear contacts

By: Clemente Vaughner

Deciding whether contact lenses are right for can feel like a daunting task, whether you''ve just started needing them or you''ve been wearing glasses your whole life. Many people have qualms ? maybe it''s the idea of putting them in that puts you off, or perhaps you simply believe them to be costly or vain.

In reality, a lot of these ideas just outdated, or complete myths. Read on to find out the truth about some of our qualms about wearing contact lenses

- They hurt. Eyes vary in shape and size - there''s no ''one size fits all'' option. A good optician will encourage you to try on a range of lenses and test them out for a length of time. There are different types to suit different lifestyles ? hard, soft or disposable ? meaning you should be able to find a pair you are comfortable wearing. It''s really a case of trying on different sorts of contact lenses until you find one that works for you.

- They''re expensive. As more and more people wear contact lenses and technology has advanced over the last decade, so contact lenses have gotten much less expensive than they used to be. The price of contact lenses is dependent on what type of contacts you wear - daily disposables are more expensive than monthlies but if you buy in bulk or online, the discounts are considerable. When you take into account the average cost of a new pair of glasses in terms of frames and lenses, the prices are comparable.

- They''re vain. With glasses becoming more and more of a fashion accessory, you could argue that wearing glasses is more sign of vanity than wearing contacts. Still, being seen as vain is no longer the criticism it might once have been and the fact is that so many people wear contact lenses it''s unlikely anyone will even think this. Additionally, the ability to change your look may be considered an extra benefit of contacts - for example being able to change eye colour on a whim.

- They''re inconvenient. Whether you consider contacts inconvenient depends on your idea of what that constitutes. For many the feel of wearing glasses, with pressure behind the ears and on the nose, or seeing the outline of frames is annoying. Others dislike putting lenses in and it can be inconveniencing if saline solutions etc aren''t to hand. However when it comes to playing sports, contact lenses are much more suitable and much less likely to fall out than spectacles.

So before you dismiss them out of hand, give contact lenses a go - you may find yourself pleasantly surprised.
