Samsung Epic 4G available August 31 for $249.99

Dash is teeing up for its subsequent large phone launch with the Samsung-made Epic 4G, which it would start selling on Aug. 31.

As its identify suggests, the Epic is a “4G” phone that helps the fourth-technology wireless technology WiMax. As Samsung’s first 4G phone for the U.S. and Sprint’s second 4G cellphone launch ever (after the HTC EVO), the Epic is certain to seize attention. But will a 25% price premium over different subtle smartphones, including Apple’s iPhone 4 and the EVO, sink Epic’s gross sales?

Sprint, naturally, says no. The company factors to its cheaper service plans as one reason. The Epic will cost $249.ninety nine with a -12 months service agreement. AT&T sells the fundamental model of the iPhone, which comes with 16 gigabytes of reminiscence, for $199.99.

Wireless costs for the two telephones also differ, however. Sprint will charge Epic house owners $69.ninety nine per month for voice and knowledge service and $10 extra monthly as a “premium data add-on” for a total of $79.99.

AT&T expenses iPhone owners $69.ninety nine a month for voice service alone. Further texting and information support costs $20 and $25 every per month. Since Epic customers will pay $79.ninety nine monthly for service in comparison with $114.99 per thirty days for iPhone customers, individuals who opt for the Epic will begin saving cash inside two months, says Sprint.

Sprint makes an identical case when evaluating the Epic to Verizon Wireless’ flagship Android phones, the Motorola Droid X and HTC Incredible. Like AT&T, Verizon divvies up voice, textual content and web/knowledge services. Add them collectively, Sprint says, and Droid X and Unimaginable homeowners pay $119.98 a month for service-or $39.ninety nine greater than Epic users will on Sprint.

I also asked Dash why it priced the Epic more than the $199.ninety nine EVO, one other 4G phone with related features, which Sprint debuted in June with a giant advertising campaign. David Owens, Dash’s vice chairman of shopper acquisition, said that the Epic’s sliding Qwerty keyboard and “Super AMOLED” display (based mostly on proprietary Samsung know-how) mean it's a costlier phone to manufacture. The EVO has a touch-display-only keyboard and a special kind of screen. Both phones are based mostly on Google’s Android working system.

Another distinction between the Epic and EVO is that the Epic will have access to Samsung’s multimedia market, Media Hub. Basically Samsung’s answer to iTunes, Media Hub will let customers hire or buy films and TV reveals from their phones. Media Hub isn’t dwell but, however Owens mentioned it will be operable soon. The EVO doesn’t have an analogous feature.

Epic buyers could enjoy one different advantage. Dash is beginning a reservation system with the Epic that can permit consumers to reserve phones online and pick them up at specified stores on launch day. Previously, Dash solely allowed customers to pre-register phones, meaning there was no assure that a phone could be out there at a selected retailer at a selected time. That should be welcome news in a market that has struggled with shortages of sought-after phones.

The brief answer to my question is that Dash thinks the Epic warrants a $250 price ticket and believes consumers will agree. There could also be another factor at play, though: subsidies. Sprint is clearly heavily subsidizing the EVO to sell it at $199.99. Samsung might not have garnered as a lot subsidy assist from Dash, both as a result of the EVO is monopolizing these funds or because Samsung is working with all four main U.S. carriers on close to-simultaneous launches this summer.

The provider will take preorders beginning August thirteen by means of an online reservation process. On Friday, you'll be able to head over to Dash's dedicated Epic 4G web page to reserve a phone for purchase, whereas provides last. Prospects can then pick up their phones on August 31 and must full their buy by September 1, 6 p.m., native time, in any other case you lose your reservation. The phone will also be bought at Best Buy, Radio Shack, and Wal-mart Shops, but no phrase yet on whether these retailers will take preorders.
