Located in the heart of the Algarve region of Portugal is the spectacular purpose-built resort of Vilamoura. With work on the resort started back in 1974, the resort is still growing and is now one of the best tourist destinations in Europe. People have lived in the region of Vilamoura for over two thousand years, and the Roman remains have been well preserved with many artefacts transferred to a nearby museum. The remains include a fine example of Roman baths where the residents of the original fishing village used to bathe. In every other way, Vilamoura is extremely modern. Most of the hotels vary between 3 and 5 star, with a great number towards the higher end of the quality scale. It is based around a Marina and is still expanding, so far covering over 20 square kilometres. Like any modern resort Vilamoura is well known for its excellent golf courses, of which there are many. There are a wide range of other leisure activities, from big game fishing excursions to shooting and sporting facilities for just about every other type of activity, including jet skiing and parascending. The resort began around a central Marina, and though it has grown massively the Marina is still the main centre. Many activities start there on Tuesdays and Thursdays, including one of the most popular ? a tour of the local caves further along the coast and only accessible by boat. As a luxury resort, Vilamoura has everything that you would expect in the way of nightlife and the restaurants and bars are of particularly high quality, whatever you''re looking to eat, you''ll be able to find it with no problem. Of course, like any resort, Vilamoura has particularly good hotels. The resort is very busy in the height of summer, but with the Portuguese climate, if you can go outside of August and July you can get some great value deals and still enjoy baking sunshine. When it comes to looking for a perfect resort holiday, Vilamoura should be right at the top of your list.
